Mixed Magnolias was painted on hand dyed paper which was adhered to the canvas before painting. Most of the background color you see is actually the dyed paper, placed in such a way to give the illusion of foliage going from the dense underbrush towards the light source at the upper right. And yes, I dyed the paper also. My dye palette closely mirrors my acrylic as well as my watercolor palette. This painting is rich in texture as well as color.
