Calico Companion

Calico Companion was painted from a photo taken by my friend, Jeanne Brenneman, at her home in Lewisburg. Seems this little calico appeared at Jeanne and Bruce's kitchen window looking for food and lodging. Guess she didn't have to look any further and became their Calico Companion. Jeanne is a great photographer and watercolorist - her photos are always a joy to paint from. I used my favorite Winsor Newton combination of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna for the separating darks in this kitty's coat and tail. Winsor Newton's beautiful transparent colors are perfect for my colorful cat paintings - cobalt blue, permanent rose, burnt sienna, indian yellow, cobalt violet and winsor purple. I do use Winsor Newton white gouache for cat whiskers and eye-lights, and usually mix it with pink or blue or even purple to give the whiskers more kitty cat appeal. Second and third photos show up close detail of Calico's lovely face and tail. Love to paint those cats! Your comments are always welcome.
